Children in Care Drug Program

For children under the care of the Director of Child Protection, either temporarily or permanently, approved prescription and non-prescription medications are covered under the Children in Care Drug Program.

How is a child eligible?

A child is eligible for medication coverage if they are:

  • in the custody of the Director of Child Protection, either temporarily or permanently; and
  • eligible for coverage through PEI Medicare.

How do I apply?

There is no application process for the Children in Care Drug Program. Once a child is brought under the care of the Director of Child Protection, they are automatically covered for medication costs.

How much of the medication cost will be covered?

All prescription medication costs are covered by the program. All non-prescription medications which are approved under the Financial Assistance Drug Program will be covered as well.

Will I get a refund for medication I already purchased?

Coverage is not retroactive through Pharmacare. Pharmacare will not reimburse you for medications you have already purchased. Reimbursement of the previously purchased claims for eligible clients may be considered through Child and Family Services.

Where can I get the medication?

The prescription can be filled at any community retail pharmacy located in Prince Edward Island.

What if the medication needed is not listed in the PEI Pharmacare Formulary?

If the medication is not included in the PEI Pharmacare Formulary, but is available for sale in Canada as a prescription medication, the child’s retail pharmacy may contact PEI Pharmacare to have the medication added to the Formulary. If the medication requested is available in Canada as an over-the-counter product, the child’s caregiver can contact the Director of Child Protection staff for coverage.

What if the child moves away from PEI?

Eligibility for this program will end the day the client leaves PEI to take up residency elsewhere.
