General Education Development (GED)
GED is an internationally recognized high school equivalency testing program. You may write the GED tests if you did not finish high school. Many community colleges and universities will accept you as a mature student if you have a satisfactory GED score.
Canadian provinces/territories are launching a new Canadian made assessment in the spring of 2024 to replace the General Education Development (GED) high school equivalency program.
Canadians will have access to the GED until May 3,2024, while the new Canadian Adult Education Credential (CAEC) is being developed. Passing GED scores will count towards the new CAEC for 3 years (unitl May 2027).
There is no effect on the validity of GED credentials that have been completed. The value of your completed GED will not change.
GED testing candidates in the process of writing GED tests, are encouraged to complete their GED testing prior to May 3, 2024.

Eligibility:
In order to write the GED test you must be:
- Canadian citizen or permanent resident
- Live in PEI
- At least 18 years of age
- Out of school for at least one full year, and
- Have not received any other grade 12 academic certificate
GED Tests
There are 5 GED tests. The subjects are:
- mathematics
- reading
- social studies
- science, and
- writing
To pass the GED , you need a score of at least 450 in each of the 5 tests.
How can I apply to write the GED test?
You may prepare for the test on your own with the GED preparation book from your local library or bookstore or you can register to attend a GED preparation course at Holland College, Collège de l'Île, or the Institute of Advanced Learning. To register for a practice test, call Holland College at (902) 566-9362 (Adult Education-Karen Ford Doyle).
To be eligible to register for the official GED Test on PEI, it is mandatory to successfully complete each Official Practice Tests (OPT) at an approved educational test centre with an approved test administrator on PEI.
You may request special accommodation to write a paper-based test if you have a physical, psychological or learning disability that will affect your ability or test-taking skills. To register for a paper-based test, contact the GED Testing Program at 902 368 4650.
What is the deadline to apply?
There is no deadline. Testing centres do testing once a month for computer based testing. If you are unable to attend your scheduled test, you must contact Pearson Vue at least 24 hours before the exam. If you fail to appear on test day, you will have to wait six months to register again.
Do I have to pay to write the GED?
There is no fee to write your GED or the GED practice test.
What should I bring to the test session?
You will be required to show photo ID with your name, birth date, address, and signature in order to write the GED, e.g. driver’s license, passport or military identification. Everything you need to write the test will be provided. Personal items including purses and cell phones must be stored with the examiner when you arrive.
When will I know if I passed?
You will receive your results in the mail upon completion of five tests. All results can be found on your GED.com profile. Results are confidential and will not be offered over the phone. You will be issued a high school equivalency diploma if you get a score of at least 450 on all five tests. You may rewrite any tests that you do not pass.
