Spring weight restrictions protect Island roads

Spring weight restrictions for heavy trucks in Prince Edward Island begin Tuesday, March 5, 2024.

As milder spring weather arrives, water from melting ice and snow seeps into asphalt, softening the ground underneath.

Heavy loads can cause pavement to break up, leading to safety hazards and costly repairs.

Truck drivers and transport companies are asked to follow posted weight restrictions and plan alternate routes or reduce loads.

Weight restrictions will be enforced and overweight fines triple, potentially to several thousand dollars.

During spring thaw, drivers should also watch for frost heaves, potholes, puddles and even ice patches.
