Since 2015, Premier Wade MacLauchlan has championed positive change and worked with Islanders to set a new course for Prince Edward Island. He has identified a number of key priorities such as fostering economic opportunities, protecting our environment, reforming social programs, and bringing a responsible approach to the province’s finances.
Our province is leading the region and country in many key indicators. Prince Edward Island’s economy is growing faster than the region and the Canadian, meaning Islanders are better off and our businesses are thriving. There are close to 5,000 additional full-time jobs over the last two years and, for the first time since 1977-78, 2018 saw the second consecutive year Prince Edward Island’s unemployment rate was below 10 per cent. Our provincial economy has seen transformative change under the Premier’s leadership through strategic investments in sectors, such as the bioscience industry, the culinary and agricultural industries with the support of Canada’s Food Island Partnership, and our thriving start-ups and small businesses - showcasing Islander’s innovative style to the world.
The Premier introduced a historic third-consecutive balance budget in 2018, targeting more supports for local business. He has introduced a new Small Business Investment Grant to encourage investments that will help them grow and thrive, expanded efficiency PEI programs to include help for businesses and farms to reduce energy use and save money, and cut the Small Business Tax Rate – saving small business up to $5,000 a year – the first decrease of a multi-year commitment to strengthen our competitive advantage.
