ARIP: Applied Research Subprogram

GF2 programs are now fully committed for the 2016/2017 fiscal year.

Applicants wishing to apply for 2017/2018 fiscal year should contact the Program Administrator.

The Applied Research subprogram has two purposes:

  •  to support the undertaking of short term applied research that will yield economic benefits to the PEI agriculture industry
  • to provide data to develop new production methods or fill information gaps. Projects should obtain statistically sound results that have practical applications which are quickly transferable to primary producers.

Who is eligible for funding?

  • Agricultural producers
  • Provincial agricultural industry organizations, clubs, and associations
  • Public & Academic Institutions
  • Small to Medium-sized Agri-business

What activities are eligible for funding assistance?

  • Variety and/or crop research trials that can include yield evaluations, climatic suitability analysis, pest resistance, and improvements in pollination
  • Crop and livestock development research that will lead to on-farm diversification
  • Crop and livestock research that will support commercialization of new agri-based products
  • Pest management research to quantify the extent of specific pest problems and/or to evaluate control measures and reduce pesticide risk
  • Projects which can demonstrate benefits to more than one Atlantic province may be considered for funding on a pan-Atlantic basis

What expenses are funded under this subprogram?

  • Salaries
  • Consulting fees
  • Equipment rental
  • Monitoring equipment
  • Travel
  • Materials and supplies, and
  • Analytical laboratory fees
  • In Kind Expenses– These are expenses such as labour, use of equipment and supplies provided to the project by the applicant for which no receipts are provided. 

The eligibility of all expenses is at the discretion of the review committee.

What expenses are not funded?

  • Capital equipment purchases
  • Non arms length transactions
  • University Overhead fees

What funding assistance is available?

  • Agriculture Industry Associations:
    • Funding ranging from 75 to 100%
    • Preference will be given to projects that demonstrate industry wide benefits and to first time Applicants
    • Maximum program contribution per project is $60,000 for one year projects and $80,000 for multi-year projects
  • Agricultural Producers
    • Funding up to 50%
    • Maximum program contribution per project is $30,000 for one year projects and $40,000 for multi-year projects.
    • Variety/Field trials initiated by Producers will be eligible for assistance as follows:
      • Field Crops - $1,000/acre @ 50% assistance, to a maximum of 5 acres (Maximum assistance is $2,500)
      • Horticultural Crops - $2,000/acre @ 50% assistance, to a maximum of 5 acres (Maximum assistance is $5,000)
  • Public & Academic Institutions and Agribusiness
    • Funding up to 25%
    • Maximum program contribution per project is $30,000 for one year projects and $40,000 for multi-year projects.
  • In-kind expenses are funding to a maximum of the following level of total eligible project costs: Agricultural Industry Associations 15%; Producers 10%; Public and Academic Institutions and Agribusiness 4%.  The amount of eligible in-kind expenses will be determined at the time of application.  For applicants to receive an in-kind payment all in-kind expenses must be listed on the budget sheet.

How do I claim the funding?

To be reimbursed, applicants must submit a claim form to the Prince Edward Island Department of Agriculture and Fisheries with invoices and proof of payment, project report and a program evaluation.
