Feedback wanted on proposed changes to Farm Registration and Farm Organizations Act
The province is inviting members of the Prince Edward Island Federation of Agriculture and National Farmers Union and members of the general farming community to share their opinions on a proposed amendment to the Farm Registration and Farm Organizations Funding Act.
What is the proposed amendment?
The Department of Agriculture is proposing a change to the Farm Registration and Farm Organizations Funding Act that will allow registration fee adjustments to be made by regulation approved by the Lieutenant Governor in Council (i.e. Cabinet) without the requirement for a ratified vote of all the approved farm organizations.
Why change and what will this mean?
Government of PEI has heard about the impacts of lengthy administrative practices required by legislative requirements and has made a commitment to explore options for reducing barriers while maintaining the appropriate checks and balances.
The proposed change would allow the department to respond in a more timely and efficient manner to farm organizations on recommendations related to registration fees. As with any legislative or regulatory amendments, consultation will remain a key part of the process.
Background information
Prince Edward Island’s Farm Registration and Farm Organizations Funding Act governs fair and equitable funding of approved farm organizations across the province. It is also used to create a database that helps verify eligibility for farm-related government programs and services.
