2018 Municipal Election Key Dates

The following key dates and processes provide a general overview.  The Municipal Election Guidebook (being developed) contains an extensive Election Task List as an appendix - election officials and CAOs should consult this resource.

May 14, 2018

  • Appoint Municipal Electoral Officer (MEO) and Deputy MEO (Council appoints, can be the municipality’s Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), municipalities can share MEOs)

September 5, 2018

By End of September

  • Determine location for election office and establish office hours (municipality and MEO)
  • Appoint Returning Officer (MEO appoints)
  • Attend Municipal Affairs Information Session (MEO and RO)

By October 5, 2018

  • Notice of Nominations (MEO publishes in newspaper, on website, and at election office location) (access the Notice of Nomination Form)

By October 9, 2018

  • MEO opens Election Office (Election Office hours must be posted in the Notice of Nominations)

October 10 – 19, 2018: Nomination Period

Candidates must complete and file the Municipal Nomination Form with the MEO or RO at the Election Office during the hours identified in the Notice of Nomination for the municipality. All nominations must be filed by 2:00 pm on Friday, October 19th, 2018. 

By October 12, 2018

  • Polling division map posted in Election Office (if municipality has geographic polling divisions)

October 19, 2018: Nomination Day

  • All nominations filed by 2:00 pm
  • MEO publishes electronic Notice of Extended Nominations by 5:00 pm (if extended nomination period is required) 
  • MEO posts Notice of Nominated Candidates in election office (if election is required) 

By October 22, 2018 

  • Appoint election officials for polling stations (RO appoints)
  • MEO publishes Notice of Extended Nominations in newspaper (if extended nomination period is required

By October 24, 2018

  • MEO publishes Notice of Election Information (newspaper, electronically, at election office and municipal office, given to each candidate)
  • RO provides officially nominated candidates with list of electors

October 26, 2018: Extended Nomination Day (if required)

  • All nominations filed by 2:00 pm
  • MEO posts Notice of Nominated Candidates (if election is required) 

Immediately After Nominations

  • MEO prepare and order ballots
  • MEO/RO prepare election supplies

By November 3rd, 2018

  • Conduct advance poll (minimum of three hours)

November 5, 2018

  • Election day (voting takes place from 9:00 am – 7:00 pm)

By November 7, 2018

  • MEO verifies results

By November 9, 2018 

  • Last day to request a recount (a candidate can make a request to the MEO)

By November 12, 2018

  • MEO completes recount (if requested or required)

By November 14, 2018 

  • Last day to request a judicial review of rejected ballots (MEO and candidate can request a review)

By November 19, 2018

  • Provincial court judge completes review
  • Latest day for MEO announce election results 
  • MEO notifies CAO of elected candidates 

Other Important Dates

Election Summary Report

The CAO must prepare and file the Election Summary Report (being developed) with the Minister within 10 days of being notified of the elected candidates. 

Disclosure Statement of Campaign Contributions and Election Expenses

All candidates (whether elected or not) must file a Disclosure Statement of Campaign Contributions and Election Expenses (being developed) to the MEO (if still appointed) or the CAO of the municipality.

The Disclosure Statement must be filed by January 5th, 2019.

The CAO will post each candidate’s Disclosure Statement on the municipal website for a period of at least 6 months.  The Summary Report of Disclosure Statements will be completed by the CAO and submitted to Council and available at the municipal office.
