Born to Read Progam

The Born to Read program is an early childhood literacy initiative that promotes the joy of reading to babies and toddlers.

How do parents participate in this program?

Parents of newborns on Prince Edward Island are given a free Born to Read package during their regular wellness visit with Public Health Nursing when their child is two months old. In this package, parents will receive a children’s board book, a PEI Public Library Card, and information about resources and programs are available for families at PEI Public Libraries.

Why is reading important for babies?

The simple act of reading to your baby or child, regardless of age, has a positive impact on their brain development. From birth, babies are natural learners. Their curious minds absorb more information between the ages of two months and four years than at any other time in their lives.

How often should I read to my baby?

Reading books every day helps children learn that reading is a routine task – similar to other daily family activities like eating, sleeping or having a bath. It only takes 15 minutes most days to establish a consistent reading pattern.

Are books for the Born to Read program available in different languages?

Yes, board books are available in English or French. Please ask for your language of choice during your Public Health Nursing visit.

How is the program supported?

The Born to Read program is funded by PEI Public Health Nursing and the PEI Public Library Service.
