School Attendance

Published date: September 11, 2026

Every day counts. Every student matters.

Regular attendance helps students build friendships, stay connected to learning, and develop the skills and confidence needed to succeed. We understand that families may face challenges that affect attendance, and schools are committed to partnering with families to support student success.

Start building this habit in kindergarten and through elementary school, so children learn right away that going to school on time, every day, is important.

Children who attend school more regularly are more likely to feel confident, included, and to succeed academically.

Students are more likely to attend school when they feel connected, welcomed, and supported. Strong relationships with peers and school staff play an important role in student attendance and well-being.

Schools are committed to working with families to identify supports and help students stay connected to learning.

Here are some tips to help build a habit of good attendance:

For younger children…

  • Set a regular bedtime and morning routine.
  • Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
  • Support your child’s health and make sure your child has the required immunizations.
  • Have a backup plan for getting to school if something comes up.
  • Stay informed about your child's attendance and talk with the school if concerns arise.
  • Try to schedule nonurgent medical appointments, extended trips, and sporting competitions when school isn’t in session.
  • If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers and school counsellors for advice on how to make your child feel comfortable and excited about learning.
  • Ask the teacher for ideas to support missed learning time.

For older students and teens…

  • Talk about the opportunities available when your teenager or preteen shows up at school every day.
  • Help your middle and high schoolers maintain daily routines, such as finishing homework and getting enough sleep.
  • Consider limiting use of devices if they interfere with sleep.
  • Encourage students to maintain consistent sleep routines.
  • Help your child balance school work, extracurricular activities, work commitments, and personal well-being.
  • Talk regularly with your child about school engagement, goals, and any challenges they may be experiencing.

Schools are here to help. If attendance is becoming a challenge, please reach out to your school. Working together, families and schools can identify supports that help students stay engaged and connected to learning.

Supports can include:

If your family is facing challenges with transportation, health, housing, anxiety, caregiving responsibilities, or other circumstances affecting attendance, please contact your school so they can direct you to available supports.

How schools and education partners are supporting attendance:

  • Providing training and resources for school staff.
  • Strengthening student wellness and engagement supports.
  • Helping schools identify attendance concerns early.
  • Working with families and community partners to remove barriers to attendance.
  • Raising awareness about the benefits of regular school attendance.
