Visiting the Archives

The Public Archives and Records Office is located at the Atlantic Technology Centre (Lower Level, Suite L20), 176 Great George Street in Charlottetown.

All visitors require a research pass to enter the Public Archives. On your first visit you will be asked to complete a registration form and provide identification (eg. driver's license, institutional photo ID, or government-issued address-bearing card). Each time you visit the Archives you will be asked to sign in and provide your pass number to staff at the Reference Desk.

Reading Room and Accessing Material

The Reading Room is your point of access when visiting the Public Archives. Staff will introduce you to the resources, provide instruction in the proper handling and use of archival material and equipment, retrieve material, and suggest possible sources that may be of interest to your research.

You are welcome to access and retrieve material in the Reading Room yourself (eg. microfilm, finding aids, and reference material).

Archival documents are held in storage areas and can be requested with a retrieval slip. Most documents can be retrieved upon request. Records stored off-site are typically available in 24-48 hours.  Material can be requested in advance by telephone (902-368-4290), email archives@gov.pe.ca, or in person. Records may be held for you if you plan to use them again within 48 hours. There is no retrieval of any stored material later than 15 minutes prior to closing time.

Some materials may be unavailable for reasons of preservation, privacy, or donor agreements. Please see staff for more information.

Computer and Internet Access

Two public access computers are available in the Reading Room. You are also welcome to bring your own laptop or tablet although there is limited access to power outlets. Wireless access is available for researchers. Users are reminded that although it is an encrypted wireless network, the Archives cannot ensure the safety of the connection or your computer while you are connected to the Public Archives wireless network.

Cell Phones

Please turn your cell phone to silent or vibrate when in the Reading Room. If you need to make or take a call, please step into the foyer to do so.
