Attending a Private Training School in PEI

Post-secondary vocational training is offered in both registered and non-registered private training schools in PEI. Registration does not guarantee quality, so it is a good idea to research the private training school you plan to attend.

Schools registered under the PEI Private Training Schools Act typically follow an industry standard.

A private training school that offers a stand-alone program rather than a full program, or offers second-language training or sport activities, is not registered because there is no legal requirement to be registered. Non-registration does not indicate the school is below standard or unreliable.

Can I get a refund from a private training school?

Each private training school has its own refund policy; however basic regulations apply to all schools:

  • If you register for a program and do not show up, the school may keep any advance registration fee to a maximum $100.
  • If the school does not provide the program on time, the school must refund the registration fee you paid (maximum $100 deposit).
  • If you are expelled for just cause, the school may keep the “earned” fees (the part of the training that has been delivered and paid for) equal to 10 per cent of total fees.
  • If you withdraw from the program without paying the full registration fee, you must pay the remaining “earned” fees (the portion of the program delivered before you left).

How do I know if a private training school is registered?

If your school is registered, it will appear on the list of private training schools registered in PEI.
