COVID-19 Student Financial Supports

To be eligible for any provincial supports for students impacted by COVID-19, a student must be residing in Prince Edward Island.  There is help available to students that are from out-of-province, including international students who are living on PEI.  There is also help available to Island students who are studying out-of-province but have returned home.

Island Post-Secondary Students

Students who live in PEI and attend UPEI, Holland College or Collège de l'Île:

Immediate Supports

  • Provincial Student Loan Payment Deferral –the repayment of Provincial Student Loans has been suspended for the period, March 30, 2020 to September 30, 2020.
  • Students may be eligible for the Temporary Rental Assistance Benefit which provides $1000 over three months to help cover the cost of rent. 
  • The province is providing a Post-Secondary Student Support Fund of $95,000 to provide direct financial assistance to students in immediate need at UPEI, Holland College and Collège de l’île through the institutions and/or their student unions.
  • The COVID-19 Income Support Fund is a one-time grant of $750 to Islanders who have lost their primary source of income or whose Employment Insurance benefits have expired. 
  • Students may be eligible for the Canada Emergency Student Benefit (CESB) which provides financial support to students who are unable to find work due to COVID-19. This benefit is for students who do not qualify for the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) or Employment Insurance (EI).
  • Students are eligible for the COVID-19 Special Situation Fund for individuals which will provide up to $1000 to those who are not eligible for any other provincial or federal support programs. The application period for the Special Situation Fund is now closed.

Employment Supports

  • In partnership with UPEI, the province is providing a $75,000 Research Fund for UPEI Students to create summer research opportunities for students.
  • The expansion of the Farm Team program includes a $2000 bursary for post-secondary students and creates a total of 250 positions for students.
  • The expansion of the Team Seafood program includes a $2000 bursary for post-secondary students and creates a total of 250 placements with seafood processors and growers.
  • The expansion of the Jobs for Youth program creates 280 student employment positions. 
  • The Provincial Post-Secondary Employment Program creates up to 320 additional jobs for students.

Islanders Studying Out-of-Province

Students who are attending a post-secondary institution in another province, but have returned home to live on PEI.

Students from Out-of-Province

Students from out-of-province who are living in PEI and studying at Island post-secondary institutions.

High School Students

PEI high school students that experience a critical loss of income due to COVID-19 may apply for some immediate emergency funding.  However, supports for high school students are more geared towards summer employment.
