Elected School Board Model Consultations

The Government of Prince Edward Island has committed to reinstating an elected school board for the Public School Branch (PSB) in the 2019 Mandate letters.  The Department of Education and Lifelong Learning has received input into elected board-related matters including,  a suitable number of elected trustees, electoral districts, election date, method of voting (online, traditional ballot, mail-in ballot), candidate eligibility, increasing civic engagement and a potential number of candidates, increasing voter turnout, and a nomination process for candidates.

Role of the Public Schools Branch Board of Directors

The Public Schools Branch (PSB) serves English students from Kindergarten to Grade 12 in 56 schools across Prince Edward Island. The PSB Board of Directors is mandated to:

  • provide strategic direction for the PSB;
  • set policy for the English public schools;
  • approve the PSB budget and operations; and
  • be accountable to students, parents, the community and the Minister of Education and Lifelong Learning for the performance of the PSB.

Public Consultation Process

The public and key stakeholders have provided feedback on reinstating an elected school board to fulfill the direction of the 2019 mandate letters. The public consultation process was launched on January 3, 2021, and closed on March 11, 2021.

At this time, all the results of the consultations and submissions are being reviewed and compiled for a report for the Department of Education and Lifelong Learning to see the recommendations by the public and education stakeholders on the direction to move forward.

An update will be provided to the public from the Department of Education and Lifelong Learning in the coming months.
