Library Policies & Procedures
Donations
The PEI Public Library Service accepts donations of books and other materials. The library reserves the right to place donations, dispose of anything not added to the collection and to refuse any donated items.
The public should contact their public library before dropping off any donations. The library does not pick up any donations - they must be dropped off at a library branch. The public may also request a tax receipt if they donate more than $100 worth of materials in a calendar year. Please note that this $100 is not based upon the item's market value price. It is determined by how much it would cost the library to purchase the item.
What kinds of items does the library accept?
- Books in excellent condition published within the last 2 years
- Classics
- Local-interest items
- DVDs
What does the library not accept?
- Items in poor condition
- Outdated items
- Encyclopedias, textbooks, Reader's Digest Condensed books
- Magazines
- VHS, cassette tapes, and CD-ROMs
Policy Manual
Like most public library systems, the PEI Public Library Service has a Policy Manual which directs the work of library staff, explains the nature of library services and describes the guidelines for library cardholders. Please note that there may be delays between changes in library policy and updates in the published policy manual. For any questions, contact Public Library Headquarters for the most up-to-date policy information.
Volunteering
The PEI Public Library Service is grateful to all the volunteers who dedicate their time and enthusiasm to enriching public libraries across the province.
As a volunteer, what would I do?
As a volunteer, you could assist in a number of important areas:
- children’s and adult programs,
- computer training, or
- outreach programs
How can I help?
Fill out and submit a Volunteer Interest Form to your local library; a criminal record check is also required. Contact the library nearest you to learn more.
