2024 Extended Angling Season

What are the dates of the 2024 Extended Seasons for rainbow trout and Atlantic salmon?

The 2024 Extended Rainbow Trout Season - September 16 to December 31 (most locations).
The 2024 Extended Atlantic Salmon Season - September 16 to October 31 on the Morell River and the Mill River (see below).

Please note that only certain sections of specific rivers are open to extended angling for rainbow trout. Additionally, the extended angling season for certain ponds ends on November 30. Please see below for dates, locations and maps, and refer to the 2024 Angling Summary

How do I participate in the 2024 Extended Season?

You need to:

  • Have your 2024 PEI Angling licence
  • Have your 2024 Wildlife Conservation Fund licence

And prior to participating, you must register and pick up an Extended Angling Season log book. Anglers can register at:

  • Register online
  • Forests, Fish and Wildlife Office at 183 Upton Rd in Charlottetown, or
  • Any Access PEI office

Are there any 2024 Extended Angling Season* changes for rainbow trout or Atlantic salmon?

A reminder that the extended rainbow trout season still closes on December 31 in most rivers.  

*A reminder that anglers must register and complete the Angling Logbook to participate in the extended angling season.

Are there any special angling requirements for trout or salmon?

Rainbow Trout:

  • Creel limit is three rainbow trout/day. Please note: only one trout can be greater than 40cm in length. 
  • Single barbless fly or barbless lure (no bait) only for rainbow trout during the extended season

Atlantic Salmon:

  • Atlantic salmon can only be fished on sections of the Morell River and Mill River (see maps at bottom of the page)
  • Single barbless fly only can be used for the extended Atlantic salmon season

You must complete and submit the log book at the end of the extended rainbow trout and Atlantic salmon season.

Boughton River (0.3MB)

  • September 16-December 31: Downstream from Ross's Dam in Bridgetown  

Brudenell River (0.4MB)

  • September 16-December 31: All waters downstream fro Rte 4 locally known as "Bells Hill"

Bradshaw River (0.4MB)

  • September 16-November 30: Affleck's Pond 
  • September 16-December 31: watershed downstream from Leard Mill Road to the confluence with Bedeque Bay

Cardigan River (0.5MB)

  • September 16-December 31: All waters downstream from Alleys Mill Road (Route 4)

Clyde River (0.4MB)

  • September 16-December 31: All waters downstream from the new Cornwall by pass (TCH) 

Dunk River (0.4MB)

  • September 16-October 31:  Angling will be permitted within Scales Pond and main river downstream from Scales Pond, including all of that section of river downstream from the steel bridge on Mill road (Rte 110) 
  • September 16-November 30:  Angling will be permitted within Scales Pond in Freetown
  • November 1-December 31: Angling will be permitted in the main river downstream from what is locally known as the "Hatchery Pond" or "Rock Pool", located ~400m upstream from the steel bridge on Mill Road (Rte 110)

Fortune River  (0.3MB)

  • September 16-December 31: Downstream from Fortune River Road 

Hillsborough - Pisquid River  (0.5MB)

  • September 16-December 31: Downstream from Route 351 in Cherry Hill

Hunter River (0.4MB) 

  • September 16-November 30: Campbells Pond
  • September 16-December 31: All waters downstream from Campbells Pond

Murray River (0.4M)

  • September 16-November 30: MacLures Pond, from the dam to the golf course bridge 

North River (0.6M)

  • September 16-December 31: All waters downstream from the North (York) River Road in Milton

Montague - Valleyfield Rivers (0.5MB)

  • September 16-December 31: All waters downstream from the pool below Knox's Pond (Sparrow's Road Bridge - Rte 320) 
  • September 16-December 31: All waters downstream from the Valleyfield Road  known as "Sutherland's Hole" (Rte 326)

Orwell River (0.5MB)

  • September 16-December 31: All waters downstream from the TCH in Orwell 

Souris River (0.6MB)

  • September 16-December 31: All sections of the main river downstream from the Gowanbrae Bridge (Rte 358) 

Vernon River (0.5MB)

  • September 16-December 31: Downstream from Murray Harbour Road

West River (0.3MB)

  • September 16-December 31: All waters downstream from the "Foot Bridge" on the Green Road in Bonshaw 

Westmoreland River (0.4MB) 

  • September 16-December 31: All waters of the east branch downstream from Rte 13 below Sherrens Pond 

Wilmot River (0.4MB) ​

  • September 16-November 30: Marchbanks Pond
  • September 16-December 31: The main river between MacMurdo Rd and Rte 1A Bridge (Red Bridge) 

Where can I fish for Atlantic salmon during the 2024 extended season?

Mill River:
Mill River has an extended season for Atlantic Salmon in 2024. This catch and release season will extend from September 16 - October 31, using single barbless fly only. The area open to angling will include Carruthers Brook, from the Rte 2 highway in Bloomfield upstream to a tributary entering from the North, a distance of approximately 1.5 km.  

Morell River:
The Morell River has an extended Atlantic Salmon Season for 2024 in the areas outlined in orange. For more detailed information, consult the 2024 Angling Summary
