Engage PEI is a provincial government initiative that oversees the recruitment and appointment process for more than 90 Government Agencies, Boards, and Commissions (ABCs) in Prince Edward Island. Its purpose is to encourage Islanders to participate in public service by serving as volunteer members on these organizations.

Serving on an ABC provides residents with an opportunity to contribute to their communities and represent public interests in government decision-making.

Types of Agencies, Boards, and Commissions (ABCs)

Engage PEI recruits members for three categories of ABCs:

1. Advisory ABCs

  • Provide advice and information to government.
  • Help inform policy development and program delivery.

2. Operational ABCs

  • Deliver goods and services.
  • Implement approved government policies and programs.

3. Regulatory ABCs

  • Regulate public or private sector activities.
  • Review licenses and permits.
  • Hear appeals related to government or third-party decisions.

Choosing an ABC

Prospective applicants are encouraged to:

  • Review ABC profiles to find areas of interest.
  • Assess how their skills, experience, and knowledge align with membership requirements.
  • Consider the expected time commitment.
  • Indicate their preferred ABCs on the application form.

When to Apply

  • Applications can be submitted at any time throughout the year.
  • Some ABCs may advertise specific vacancies with application deadlines.
  • Applicants interested in a particular board should apply at least two months before a vacancy to increase the likelihood of being considered.

Application Requirements

Applications can be submitted:

Recommended Supporting Documents

Applicants are encouraged to include:

  • A résumé
  • A cover letter
  • References
  • Letters of support

These documents can strengthen an application and help match candidates to suitable opportunities.

What Happens After Applying?

The appointment process generally follows these steps:

  1. Application is received and confirmed.
  2. Applicant information is added to the database for selected ABCs.
  3. Applications may also be considered for other ABCs matching the applicant’s qualifications and experience.
  4. As vacancies occur, departments submit appointments for consideration to Cabinet Committee on Policy and Priorities and to Cabinet.
  5. Cabinet reviews recommendations for approval.
  6. Successful candidates may accept or decline the appointment.
  7. Once accepted, an Order-in-Council is issued for LGIC appointments and published in the Royal Gazette.
  8. Appointments are publicly announced through government news releases.

Additional Requirements

Some ABC appointments require applicants to submit a criminal record check.

Compensation and Honorariums

Most ABC positions are volunteer roles. However:

  • Eligible expenses, such as travel, may be reimbursed.
  • Some ABCs provide honorariums based on Treasury Board guidelines.
  • Civil servants are not eligible to receive honoraria.
