Prince Edward Island Housing Council

The Prince Edward Island Housing Council (the ‘Council’) is being created to oversee the implementation of the Prince Edward Island Housing Action Plan 2018-2023.

What is the function of the Housing Council?

In overseeing the implementation of the Housing Action Plan, the council will provide advice to the Cabinet Committee on Housing and direction to the Housing Hub, an affordable housing centre of excellence. The council will also provide advice on the newly created Community Housing Fund and ensure the Housing Plan aligns with government’s goals for affordable housing.

The multi-sectoral council will comprise people knowledgeable of, and committed to, the plan’s vision and guiding principles. The establishment of the council recognizes that successful implementation of the housing plan depends on active community participation and collaboration to maximize supports and services for all Islanders.

How many people are on the council?

The Housing Council will have a minimum of 10 members: four provincial government representatives and six community members who bring a diverse range of knowledge, experience, expertise and executive leadership related to implementing solutions to complex issues.

What are the requirements of council members?

Each council member is required to possess the ability to represent one or more of the following perspectives, or contribute the following skills:

  • knowledge of housing continuum (emergency shelters to home ownership) sector and market, with a particular focus on affordable housing
  • housing developer, landlord, or service provider
  • construction, architecture, engineering
  • corporate and not-for-profit
  • rural and urban
  • board experience
  • decision making capabilities
  • financial acumen

What are the nomination requirements?

Housing Council members will be appointed by Executive Council.

Will I get paid?

You will not get paid to attend meetings. You will get travel expenses covered to attend meetings.

What is the time commitment of the council?

The Housing Council will meet monthly during the start-up phase and quarterly thereafter. Additional meetings may be held at the call of the co-chairs.
