How do I qualify for the Island Essentials Benefit (IEB)?
- Prince Edward Island residents who are at least 19 years old and file an income tax return for 2025 will automatically receive the IEB.
Do I have to apply?
- No, you do not have to apply. You will automatically be assessed for this benefit once you file your 2025 PEI income tax return and you will receive it according to your registered method with the Canada Revenue Agency.
- You do not need to provide your private details to be eligible for or to receive this benefit, you only need to file your income taxes with the Canada Revenue Agency. Please see Phishing 101 | Be Safe Online for helpful information.
How much will my benefit be?
- The annual total benefit depends on both your annual income and family status.
- Singles with a net income of up to $95,000 per year will receive the maximum amount of $310. Those with a net income between $95,000 and $108,500 will receive between $310 and the minimum amount of $175, and those who earn over $108,500 (net) will receive the minimum amount of $175.
- Couples or single parents whose net income is up to $95,000 will receive the maximum amount of $365. Those with a net income between $95,000 and $114,000 will receive a prorated amount (minimum $175), and those who earn over $114,000 (net) will receive $175.

When will I receive the payments?
- The payment schedule depends on the amount of your benefit.
- Individuals eligible for the maximum annual amount will receive their benefit in quarterly payments beginning in July and following Canada Revenue Agency’s payment schedule.
- Those receiving less than the maximum amount will receive three payments, in July, October and November, to total the $175 annual payment.
- Those who are eligible for the minimum amount of $175 will receive payment in November.

- In 2027, once the IEB has fully replaced the provincial Sales Tax Credit, payments will follow the federal government’s regular payment schedule; please check your benefit notice provided by Canada Revenue Agency.
How is this different from the Provincial Sales Tax Credit that I used to receive?
More people will receive the IEB and recipients will receive more money. The IEB will be delivered to all eligible Islanders, regardless of income, whereas the provincial Sales Tax Credit was income tested.

Why am I receiving this benefit?
- The IEB is intended to help with rising costs of everyday essentials like gas, groceries and utilities. It is a direct payment that lets you choose how it is spent, depending on your priorities.
