Community Care Facilities and Nursing Homes Board - Licensing
The Community Care Facilities and Nursing Homes Board (CCFNH) is responsible for licensing community care facilities and privately owned nursing homes across Prince Edward Island. The Board ensures the facility is providing care or nursing services that are safe and of good quality in an environment appropriate to meet the needs of the residents. Each facility must have its licence renewed every year.
The CCFNH Board is comprised of a mix of industry professionals, government employees, and a representative of island seniors.
In addition to licensing facilities, board members:
- advise on required standards for facilities and the care and services provided,
- monitor the operations of facilities to ensure they comply with the prescribed standards, and
- provide guidance on matters of resident assessment and placement.
What criteria does the Board use for licensing?
Before issuing or renewing its licence, the Board ensures the facility complies with the legislation, regulations and operational and care service standards. A licensing decision is based on reports from a series of annual professional inspections in the following areas:
- Care services
- Food (dietary) services
- Environmental health
- Fire safety
- Plumbing and heating
Does the Board issue new licences?
New licences for private nursing homes are governed by the Minister of Health and Wellness. The Minister will notify the Board where it is determined that a new allotment of nursing home beds is required. The Board will receive applications for a licence to operate a community care facility that is privately owned, operated and funded. Call (902) 368-6152 to request application information.
