Medical Director for Provincial Services & Innovation
Purpose of the Position
Reporting to the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of Health PEI, the Medical Director for Provincial Services & Innovation is a senior member of the Physician Leadership Team and is accountable for a broad range of activities associated with Provincial Services Portfolio. The incumbent is responsible for providing senior medical staff leadership within the Health Authority focused on the development, implementation and monitoring of Portfolio-related strategies and oversight of the delivery of medical services and medical staff, as well as directing Portfolio functions to ensure compliance with the Health PEI Medical Staff Bylaws and associated Rules and regulations.
The successful candidate will have excellent organizational skills and a demonstrated ability to communicate complex information, problem solve, and work collaboratively as part of a team.

Remuneration
Up to $234,600 (contract rate) / $218,960 (salary rate)
Duties/Responsibilities
- Support Health PEI to achieve its strategic goals and objectives by maintaining strong and collaborative relationships between the Provincial Services and Innovation Portfolio and senior leaders in the MAO and the Health PEI Offices.
- As part of the MAO, and in collaboration with the Health PEI Offices, as appropriate, assess the feasibility of new Portfolio medical services or programs, lead the development and implementation and associated change management activities of strategic planning for the Provincial Services and Innovation Portfolio which is consistent with Health PEI mandates and goals; monitor progress/outcomes and ensure reporting requirements are met.
- Provide direct oversight and supervision of the Portfolio’s Department Heads and Program Medical Advisors. Coach, mentor and motivate the medical leadership staff and support individual and team development.
- Collaborate with the MAO, Health PEI Offices and the Portfolio’s Department Heads to discuss and analyze medical staff resources, workload and staffing to determine human resource requirements and address human resource concerns in order to provide continued quality medical services.
- Provide strategic leadership and direction with respect to quality data, evidence, monitoring and improvement activities in the Provincial Services and Innovation Portfolio.
- Work in partnership with other MAO Portfolios and Health PEI Offices in order build effective and collaborative networks across the health care system.
- Oversee effective medical risk management and resolution of Portfolio-related concerns and complaints ensuring compliance with procedures and requirements as articulated in the Health PEI Medical Staff Bylaws.
- Provide oversight to all Appointment and Privileging (A&P) and Concerns and Complaints (C&C) processes in the Portfolio, ensuring that all requirements laid out in the Health PEI Medical Staff Bylaws are achieved.
- In collaboration with the MAO, oversee the development, and contribution, of various reporting submissions and responses to requests for information (e.g., Annual Reports, CEO Risk Report, etc.).
Minimum Qualifications
- Must have a Medical Degree from a recognized medical school, in a relevant clinical specialty.
- Must have considerable (3-5 years) relevant clinical practice experience.
- Must have a valid license (or eligibility for same) to practice medicine in PEI.
- Must have considerable (3-5 years) management/leadership experience, preferably in a health/medical field.
- Must have knowledge of the PEI health care system, relevant legislation, Medical Staff Bylaws and the Master Agreement between the Medical Society of Prince Edward Island, the Government of Prince Edward Island and Health PEI.
Other Qualifications
- Courses and/or professional development in leadership is considered an asset.
- Experiencing applying the principles of a Just Culture approach is considered an asset.
- Knowledge of administrative management and leadership principles is considered an asset.
- Knowledge and use of clinical practice/best practice guidelines is considered an asset.
