PEI Physiotherapy Sponsorship Program

The PEI Physiotherapy Sponsorship Program is a new initiative to support Health PEI in recruiting physiotherapy students to acute healthcare facilities within the province.

The sponsorship will provide guaranteed full-time employment for physiotherapy students in their final year of study and a financial grant from the Government of Prince Edward Island.

Sponsored students will be required to participate in a return-in-service commitment of three years (5,850 hours) of employment. 

PEI Physiotherapy Sponsorship Program - Applications for 2018 Now Closed

Am I eligible for the program?

To be eligible, you must be enrolled in your final year of an accredited Master’s of Science in Physiotherapy program (or equivalent program) with plans to graduate in 2018.

How do I apply?

You must submit a completed application form and supporting documentation to the address listed on the bottom of the application.

Supporting documents include:

  • Latest official transcripts; and
  • Written essay (Maximum of 500 words describing why you would be an asset to Health PEI’s physiotherapy services).

What is the deadline to apply?

The deadline to apply is Friday, February 16, 2018.  

If selected, will I receive any funds as a sponsored student?

Yes. In addition to the program providing full-time employment, sponsored students will be granted a three-year return in service agreement (5,850 hours) and provided with $20,000, as well as funding to complete the Physiotherapy Competency Exam.

Where will I be working for my sponsorship?

Sponsored students will be employed by Health PEI and designated to a work site at Western Hospital, Community Hospital O’Leary, or Souris Hospital.  

How many sponsorship opportunities are there?

The number will be determined based on the projected needs of the facilities within Health PEI.

How are sponsored candidates selected?

Qualified applicants will be offered an interview and reference checks will be conducted. The interview results and reference checks, paired with completed application/supporting documents, will all be considered during the selection process.

When are interviews held?

Interviews will be set-up shortly after the application deadline date. If you do not reside in PEI, virtual and/or phone interviews can be arranged.

If I am selected for a sponsorship opportunity, when will I be made aware?

Successful students will be notified upon completion of the interview process/successful reference checks. Timing will be dependent on needs within the PEI healthcare system.

Is preference given to Prince Edward Island residents?

Yes. The applicant must identify on his/her application their province of legal residency. To be considered a resident of PEI, you must have graduated from a PEI high school, or are a dependent student whose parents/guardians are PEI residents, or have lived in PEI for greater than or equal to, 12 months while NOT a student at any post-secondary institution.

During my return-in-service commitment, am I able to apply for another position within Health PEI?

Yes, you may apply to any other physiotherapy jobs posted within Health PEI; however, if you leave your initial sponsorship placement prior to the conclusion of your return-in-service commitment, you will be required to pay back your sponsorship monies (pro-rated basis).

If I cannot fulfil my return-in-service commitment, what is required of me?

You must notify the Recruitment & Retention Secretariat of your change in plans and you will be required to return any funds (pro-rated basis) distributed to you as per the return-in-service commitment.
