Phenylketonuria (PKU) Supplement Program
If you or your child has been diagnosed with phenylketonuria (PKU), you may be eligible for coverage of approved nutritional supplement costs through the Phenylketonuria Supplement Program.
Am I eligible?
You or your child are eligible for the program if you:
- are a PEI resident as defined by the Drug Cost Assistance Act;
- have a valid PEI Health Card; and
- have been diagnosed with phenylketonuria.
How do I apply?
Your physician must request registration into the Phenylketonuria Supplement Program and include your confirmed diagnosis from the IWK Biochemical Genetics Department with your application.
How much of the cost will be covered?
If a registered dietitian recommends:
- eligible special low-protein formulas, all costs will be covered by the program; and
- specialty food items carried through the National Food Distribution Centre, costs will be covered up to a maximum of $3,600 annually.
Where can I get my nutritional supplements?
Once you are registered with the program, you can order your approved formula from the National Food Distribution Centre to be shipped to an address of your choice.
If specialty food items are recommended, these can also be ordered from the National Food Distribution Centre.
Will I get a refund for nutritional supplements I already purchased?
Coverage is not retroactive; you will not be reimbursed for nutritional supplements you have already purchased.
What if I move away from PEI?
Your eligibility for this program will end the day you leave PEI to take up residency elsewhere.
