Cancer Treatment and Fertility

Published date: March 30, 2026

Will cancer treatment impact my fertility?

Some types of cancer and treatments can impact your fertility. If fertility is important to you, it is important to ask your health care provider if your diagnosis or treatment plan poses any risk to your fertility.

What should I do if my fertility is likely to be affected?

If your diagnosis or treatment plan has potential to affect your fertility you may want to discuss fertility preservation options with a specialist at a fertility clinic. Any physician or nurse practitioner involved in your care can refer you to a fertility clinic. This includes your primary care provider, surgeon, or another specialist.

What does oncofertility mean?

Oncofertility is a medical discipline that brings together oncology and reproductive medicine to help cancer patients.

Where can I find more resources about oncofertility?

In 2026, the Atlantic Canada Oncofertility project adopted guidelines and created resources to support cancer patients in Atlantic Canada as they navigate fertility concerns during their cancer care. These guidelines and resources can be found on the Atlantic Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Network (APPHON) website.
