Growth Hormone Drug Program

If your child has been diagnosed with a proven growth hormone deficiency, or with Turner syndrome, he or she may be eligible for coverage of approved growth hormone supplements through the Growth Hormone Drug Program.

Is my child eligible?

Your child is eligible for the program if they

  • are a PEI resident as defined by the Drug Cost Assistance Act
  • have a valid PEI Health Card
  • have been diagnosed by an endocrinologist with:
  • a proven growth hormone deficiency; or
  • Turner syndrome.

How do I apply?

Your child’s endocrinologist must submit a letter to request registration into the Growth Hormone Drug Program.

How much of the medication cost will be covered?

All costs of approved growth hormone supplements are covered by the program.

What if my child’s medication is not listed in the PEI Pharmacare Formulary?

Some medications in the PEI Pharmacare Formulary, are approved on a special authorization basis through the Growth Hormone Drug Program. If your physician prescribes a drug in this category, he or she can submit a Standard Special Authorization to have a medication considered for coverage.

If your medication is not included in the PEI Pharmacare Formulary, it will not be eligible for coverage.

Where can I get my child’s medication?

Once you are registered with the program, you can pick up your child’s medications at the Provincial Pharmacy. If you cannot pick up the medications, you can pay the courier cost and have them delivered to your home.

Will I get a refund for medication I already purchased?

Coverage is not retroactive; you will not be reimbursed for medications you have already purchased.

If your medication is not provided by Provincial Pharmacy, you will not be reimbursed for medications filled at an alternate pharmacy.

What if we move away from PEI?

Eligibility for this program will end the day your child leaves PEI to take up residency elsewhere.
