Hillsborough Hospital is a 69-bed psychiatric hospital that provides specialized care, long-term treatment and rehabilitation for individuals facing acute or enduring mental illness, cognitive disabilities or psycho-geriatric conditions.

What patients does Hillsborough Hospital serve?

Hillsborough Hospital provides services to patients with:

  • acute and chronic mental illness;
  • psychogeriatric conditions;
  • sustained and enduring mental illness;
  • intellectual disabilities with concurrent mental illness; and
  • psychiatric symptoms complicated by addictions.

What specialized services are offered to patients?

As the provincial in-patient psychiatric facility, the major specialized services offered at Hillsborough Hospital includes:

  • assessment and treatment;
  • behavioural management and modification;
  • rehabilitation / life skills;
  • psychiatric clinical assessments; and
  • psychogeriatric services.

What programs are available to patients?

Each patient will have access to a program plan developed specifically to their needs and strengths. Programs are offered with the support of social workers, occupational therapists and workers, psychologists, registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, resident care workers, pastoral care and volunteers.  Patient programming includes:

  • Music Therapy and Groups;
  • Social Reminiscence Group to support the Senior population with social stimulation and companionship using positive historical memorabilia;
  • Church Services;
  • Walking, Yoga, Gym and Sports Programs;
  • Psychosocial School Program (Unit 7);
  • Community Integration Programs (eg. outings, dances, camps, picnics);
  • Life Skills / Community Access;
  • AA Meetings;
  • Bingo;
  • Craft, Gardening, Cooking and Grocery Shopping Groups;
  • Drop-In Group (trivia/social skills);
  • Wellness Group – Mindfulness, Thinking Style, Goal setting, coping skills, relaxation (Unit 3); and
  • The Rhythmic Arts Project (TRAP) Group.

When can I visit a patient?

At Hillsborough Hospital, family/partners in care and visitors are asked to prearrange all visits with the patient care team and to call ahead to verify if the visit can still occur. All family/partners in care and visitors are asked to stop at the front desk to sign in on arrival and sign out when they leave the hospital. Learn more about Family Presence and what you should know before visiting a patient.
