Orthopaedic Intervention Clinic
The clinic is led by an Orthopaedic Nurse Practitioner with specialized training to assess, diagnose and manage orthopaedic issues related to the shoulders, hips or knees. The Orthopaedic Nurse Practitioner collaborates with the Island’s six Orthopaedic Surgeons and is capable of providing non-operative treatments such as medication prescriptions, referrals, and joint injections.
Type of injections the Orthopaedic Nurse Practitioner is able to provide include:
- Subacromial
- Glenohumeral shoulder joint
- Fluoro guided Intra-articular hip
- Intra-articular knee
- Bicep tendon
- AC joint
- Greater Trochanter bursa
Do I need a referral?
Yes. Referrals to the clinic are accepted from your primary care provider (physicians and nurse practitioners) and allied health professionals (i.e physiotherapist, occupational therapist, dietician, massage therapist, etc.).
I am a provider/allied health professional, how do I refer to the Orthopaedic Intervention Clinic?
Referrals can be sent to the clinic by:
- Completing the Orthopaedic Intervention Clinic Referral Form [PDF | 193 KB]; or
- Submitting a general referral letter on the EMR.
Note: The referral letter should specify patient demographics (Name, DOB, MRN, contact telephone #, email and current address), presenting concern, comorbidities and current medications.
Referrals can be faxed to the Orthopaedic Intervention Clinic at 902-368-6921.
An x-ray is required within 3 months of the presenting issue.
If the referring provider does not have the authority to order diagnostic imaging, the Orthopedic Nurse Practitioner will arrange the pre-appointment x-ray.
What do I need to bring with me to my appointment?
Identification: All patients and support persons need to provide a photo ID. Patients will also be required to have a valid PEI Health Card.
Information: Please have a list of all the medications you are currently taking. This should include over the counter vitamins or supplements. You may also be asked about your personal health history.
