Provincial Laboratory Services uses multiple Health Canada-authorized COVID-19 testing methods and devices to meet Islanders’ needs for:

  • routine testing,
  • urgent/stat testing, and
  • large-scale/surge testing.

The Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) and Prince County Hospital laboratories use RT-PCR GeneXpert and BioFire devices for urgent and routine single tests. These instruments can deliver results within one hour of being received by the lab.

For large scale testing, the QEH lab uses a RT-PCR platform from BD.

Western Hospital, and Kings County Memorial Hospital use the Abbott ID Now test.
