Graduate Students and Post-doctoral Fellowship
The Graduate Students and Post-doctoral Fellowship supports students and fellows wishing to undertake innovative research on industry relevant projects under the guidance of a strong research team and supervisor.
The project must provide economic benefit to the province.
Who is eligible for research funding?
Students who demonstrate high academic achievement and a clear plan for industry related research may qualify for funding for the duration of the project. Eligible applicants must:
- study and reside in PEI;
- be from academia or a private-sector company;
- demonstrate the capacity to conduct proposed research; and
- clearly articulate the research plan and commercialization potential of the project.
New project submissions from an applicant in default on any reporting, project completion or financial obligation to Innovation PEI will not be reviewed until a resolution to the default is reached.
What projects are eligible for funding?
Funding may be available for innovative research that has commercialization potential or outcomes, enhances the researcher’s skills and fits clearly into one of the following sectors:
- bioscience
- value-added food
- Information and communication technology (ICT)
- aerospace
- professional services
- advanced manufacturing
You are required to disclose and address:
- any potential ethical considerations resulting from this project
- the use of intellectual or material property protected by copyright or patents
- any partnerships relevant to the proposed project including private sector collaborations or industry associations
What level of assistance is available?
Masters students are eligible to receive $20,000 per year for the duration of their Masters studies to a maximum of two years. A Masters student who converts to a PhD program after their first year requires written approval from Innovation PEI; support will not extend beyond the previous timeline.
PhD students are eligible for $20,000 for the duration of PhD studies to a maximum of three years.
Post-doctoral Fellows are eligible to receive $40,000 per year to support doctorate level research to a maximum two-year period.
If a successful applicant receives additional scholarship or funding, the Innovation PEI contribution may be reduced; for example:
If a federal tri-council scholarship is awarded, funding will reduce to $15,000 for that year (Masters or PhD). A post-doctoral contribution will be negotiated based on the award level.
If the scholarship or award exceeds $10,000, Innovation PEI reserves the right to adjust accordingly.
What criteria are used to evaluate funding applications?
Not all projects meeting the minimum criteria will receive funding. Applications will be evaluated against a clear set of criteria using only the information contained in the submission and the following considerations:
- Applicants/supervisors who received previous provincial government funds may be asked to provide additional information to clearly differentiate ongoing research from the graduate/fellowship project.
- Applicants in arrears with any government department or crown corporation will be disqualified.
What process will be followed to assess the applications?
The Graduatestudent/Fellow application form and application for recruitment outlines specific format requirements such as the maximum number of pages or word count permitted for each section.
- Space allocation is based on a single-sided, 8.5” x 11” page, size 10 font.
- Charts, pictures and other elements must be posted to space designated.
- Responses exceeding designated limits will be discarded prior to review and scoring.
- Supporting or proof documents will be accepted as appendices but must be referenced in the main application.
Submit one hard copy and one electronic copy to Innovation PEI before the deadline. Applications will not be accepted after the due date; extensions will not be considered.
