Aboriginal Case Worker

The purpose is to provide casework, programs, intervention and support with a focus on culturally appropriate services to Aboriginal clients before, during and after the Court process. The Aboriginal Case Worker makes referrals to other community services, liaises with related community agencies, and provides training on diversity and other related areas.

What services can an Aboriginal Case Worker provide?

The Aboriginal Case Worker offers programs and one to one interventions for youth and adults to assist, support and treat individuals and families experiencing significant personal difficulties associated with criminal behaviour, and high risk behavior directed toward self or others.

More specifically, the Aboriginal Case Worker provides culturally specific interventions in the areas of mental health, anger management, intimate partner violence, family counseling, motivational and supportive counseling.

The worker also assists clients in participating in cultural healing practices by bringing in Elders to conduct smudging ceremonies, cultural counselling, Healing Circles and Spiritual Healing.

What is the referral process?

Referrals are accepted for youth and adults who are involved in the criminal justice system as a result of committing a criminal offence.  These individuals are referred by the Courts, Probation Services, and Youth Justice Services.  Services are made available regardless of whether or not a behaviour has resulted in a conviction under the Criminal Code of Canada.  A person may self-refer to the program and referrals are accepted from other community agencies.

Is there a fee?

There is no fee for these services.
