Meadowview Cottages: Immigration at Work
The current owners of Meadowview Cottages, Emily Wang and Eric Li moved to PEI in February of 2014. After living in Beijing, Emily and her husband decided they wanted a change from big city life and start over in a new location. The couple had friends living in PEI and they recommended to Emily and Eric to consider the Island because of its beauty and relaxing environment. PEI offered the change of pace the couple was looking for and quickly became their new home.
When Emily came to PEI she was interested in operating a cottage business in the tourism sector and she found the opportunity to purchase Meadowview Cottages in Miltonvale Park. The biggest obstacle the couple faced as they took over ownership of their new business was the language barrier. Emily and Eric have worked hard to learn English to ensure the best service and experience for their customers.
Islanders have been very friendly and helpful. The former owner worked with them for the first summer to help with the transition and to teach them about the business and the tourism industry. Emily has also worked closely with the PEI Association for Newcomers to Canada and PEI Connectors throughout her journey to learn more about doing business on PEI. The support they have received from the community has meant a lot for Emily and her family.
The family plans to remain in PEI for a long time and is happy to call PEI their new home. Their son is enjoying many different activities such as soccer and playing the guitar and saxophone. Emily’s offers this advice to other newcomers:
It is a very different market from China to Canada. It can be easier than China because you have control and do the work you need to. It can also be a lot of fun.”
