Precision Core Archery Equipment: Immigration at Work
In 2007, Jianan Zhang along with two partners established China Eastern Dragon Archery, an archery factory and club in Beijing, China. It was a natural fit for the national grade competitor and archery referee to start an archery business on PEI when he moved here in 2014. Precision Core Archery Equipment imports competitively priced archery equipment parts from China to produce and sell professional grade bows and arrows for the North American archery market.
Shortly after opening his business, Jianan learned that an archery facility was operating only 16 km away. In an effort to better understand the archery business in North America, Jianan met with the owner of Cass’ Creek Archery Club, Duncan Crawford. Duncan was instrumental in forming the provincial archery association in PEI, coached the Province’s first archery team in the Canada Winter Games, and is an international competitor.
During their meeting it quickly became evident that these two entrepreneurs could collaborate to better serve the needs of their clients. “By owning a competing business I wasn’t sure how to approach Duncan,” Jianan said. “I think Duncan felt I was nervous at first but he was very hospitable.” While each owns an archery supply business they have focused in two very distinct and separate markets segments which has allowed them to work together to complement each other’s business and grow the sport of archery on PEI.
Jianan and Duncan plan to continue to work together and develop their partnership. In the future they hope to expand the existing indoor archery facility from 8 to 16 shooting targets, offer outdoor hunting tours, and develop a website to expand sales of archery equipment. “Archery is our common hobby. We love this sport and this business. We truly enjoy working together in this field.” Jianan said.
Jianan’s willingness to explore new business ideas has allowed him to forge a new working relationship, better understand the business landscape and grow his business.
