PEI Home Renovation Program

The PEI Home Renovation Program provides financial assistance to qualifying Islanders to help cover the cost of major structural renovations to their homes. Eligible applicants may receive up to a maximum $12,000 for eligible renovations to the structure, heating, plumbing, and electrical systems or to improve life safety.  Or in the case of an applicant with a permanent disability, up to a maximum $16,000 may be available if the renovations improve the accessibility of the house.

Previous grant recipients will be eligible to reapply in 15 years.

Am I eligible for help to pay for renovating my home?

You are eligible to apply if:

  • you are a PEI resident (have a PEI Health Card) and a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident;
  • your combined income is $50,000 or less;
  • the property is your principle residence and you currently reside in the home;
  • you are an owner of the property or have a life interest in the property;
  • your property value is $300,000 or less;
  • you have not met the maximum grant through previous applications to the PEI Home Renovation Programs.

How do I apply?

Fill in the application for the PEI Home Renovation Program with all relevant details. Sign the declaration acknowledging your understanding of the program rules, and sign the CRA consent section (in the application) authorizing proof of income.

Prioritize your requests (in the application) to renovations that meet your greatest need, as funding is limited (see maximum grant scale below). Any incomplete applications will not be processed.

How does the program work?

Once your application is received, it goes through an intake process to determine that it meets all program criteria & eligibility. We then follow up with a Letter of Consideration for funding and the next steps in the process.

  • To obtain final approval for funding, submit 2 competitive quotes for review within 90 days of receiving your letter. If more time is needed to secure quotes, you must contact our office to request an extension.
  • Supporting documents may be included with the letter to assist you with getting proper, detailed quotes.
  • The quotes will be reviewed and details verified for eligible renovation requests.
  •  An official approval letter stating the successful contractor, and the grant amount (see maximum grant scale below) that will be funded by the PEIHRP programs, will be mailed to you.
  • You will have a period of 6 months as of the approval letter date to complete the approved work, with an option to request an extension, if required. Failure to complete the work or contact our office for an extension will result in an automatic closing of your file.
  • Your application will remain active for a maximum period of one year from the date our office receives it.
  • If for any reason you fail to complete the approved renovations within that time, your file will be closed, and you will need to re-apply and be assessed again for funding eligibility

Things you need to know…

  • Any renovations started or completed prior to approval are not eligible for a grant.
  • Eligible renovation requests must satisfy a “must have” essential repair, and not a “want to have” cosmetic upgrade to the home. (ie. like refresh painting, upgrade flooring, changing fixtures)
  • Renovations outside the home footprint (ie. Driveway, shed, detached garage) are not eligible for renovations or repairs.
  • Heat pumps, storm doors are not eligible renovations under the PEI HRP.
  • Combined Income is used to determine maximum grant amount available to applicant, and considers income of ALL residents over the age of 18 years old, living in the home.
  • If you are applying for additional funding under the PEI HRP as a person with a disability, you must submit a medical verification form with your application indicating the permanent disability, and the necessary modifications to the home to improve accessibility or life safety.
  • Payments for approved work are completed once invoices and Request for Payment (required) and Payee forms (if applicable) are provided to our office.
  • Post-inspections by qualified staff may be necessary to ensure compliance with building codes and industry standards prior to payment being released.
  • Once the maximum grant (based on combined income) is received, you are not eligible for another grant within 15 years.
