Provincial Assets Acquisition

The Government of Prince Edward Island acquires land for a number of reasons including the development of:

  • Highways
  • Schools
  • Hospitals
  • Wildlife and environmental protection areas

Does the province want to buy my land and if yes, how does the process work?

If you think your land would be of interest to the province, contact the Department of Transportation, Infrastructure and Energy to have your offer reviewed. A committee will review your offer and determine if there is interest in your land. If there is interest, you will be notified and negotiation regarding price and conditions will commence.

Can I donate land to the province?

The province will accept donations if the land has been identified as land that would complement existing land holdings or management programs.

Can the Provincial Government take my land if I don’t want to sell it?

While the Provincial Government does have the power to do so under the Expropriation Act negotiations in good faith are preferred.

What does the Government pay for land?

The Province pays market value which is determined by an internal or independent appraisal.
