THREE (3) MATERIALS LAB TECHNICIAN INTERNS
FULL-TIME TEMPORARY INTERNSHIP PLACEMENT (Commencing April 2019 for 26 weeks)
LOCATION – Mount Stewart
The Department of Transportation, Infrastructure and Energy has created six-month internship placements for graduates in the fields of engineering, lab technologists, construction technology and management, building inspector and visitor services.
These intern positions will work in the Materials Testing Lab in Mount Stewart. The intern will perform standard engineering tests on materials used in highway and bridge construction. Duties will include aggregate/soil testing including sieve analysis, specific gravities, moisture density relationships, hydrometers, Atterberg limits, Los Angeles abrasions, micro deval, and soundness. Duties will also include the analysis of hot mix asphaltic concrete including the preparation of asphalt mix designs, air voids, gradation, liquid asphalt content, stability and flow, asphalt stripping tests and other duties as required.
Candidate Qualifications:
• Must have completed a post- secondary diploma in Construction Technology and Management within the last two (2) years and are seeking a focused work term;
• Effective oral and written communication skills;
• Sound judgement and strong interpersonal skills;
• Reliability with a good attendance record;
• Must have a valid Driver’s license and access to reliable transportation;
• Familiarity with computer software;
• Provide a satisfactory current Criminal Records Check, prior to employment;
• Provide a current Hearing Test, prior to employment;
• Experience related to Highway Construction materials would be an asset.
Knowledge & Skills the Intern May Require:
• Knowledge of the role that Transportation, Infrastructure and Energy play in the delivery of Capital projects material testing.
• Knowledge of lab operations and many testing requirements, ASTM standards and construction processes.
• Ability to work as a team player.
Salary Range: $22.44 per hour (UPSE Level 11, Step 3)
Bi-Weekly Hours: 75.0 hours bi-weekly
