Sick Leave

Published date: June 30, 2026

After 30 days of working with the same employer, an employee can take up to four unpaid sick days during a 12-month period. Paid sick time is available to employees who have:

  • After 12 months of continuous service, 1 paid day per 12-month period.
  • After 24 months of continuous service, 2 paid days per 12-month period.
  • After 36 months of continuous service, 3 paid days per 12-month period.

An employee is paid their regular pay for a paid sick day. Employees who have paid sick days may use them before using their unpaid sick days.

Sick days do not carry over. An employer can only ask for a sick note after an employee has missed 5 consecutive days. The sick note can come from a qualified health practitioner who is giving care to the employee at that time.
