Animal Welfare Act
Overview of Animal Welfare Act:
- Animals must be provided with adequate food, water, and shelter and access to veterinary care when injured or ill.
- It is illegal to travel with dogs, and other companion animals, in the back of a pickup truck.
- Any form of cosmetic surgery (tail docking, tail nicking, ear cropping, etc.) on animals is prohibited.
- The owner of an animal taken or seized is liable to pay any costs associated with care and treatment of the animal while in protective custody.
- A first offense under the Animal Welfare Act means a fine between $500 to $10,000 and possible imprisonment of up to six (6) months.
- If found guilty under the Animal Welfare Act, a judge can ban offenders from ever owning another pet.
- Under the legislation, a judge has the power to request offenders complete a psychological evaluation.
- Horses and dogs cannot be tethered unless they are in reach of food, water and shelter and can move comfortably.
- A dog cannot be tethered outside for more than 30 minutes between 11 pm and 6 am.
- Prior to placing a companion animal for adoption, the PEI Humane Society shall ensure the animal has no apparent health or behavioural problems.
- The PEI Humane Society has the right to refuse adoption if an owner is not considered suitable to adopt the animal.
- Pet stores require licences that must be updated before July 1 each year.
