Government launching active transportation fund to address climate change

Driver’s license fees are being reinstated to fund a new $5 million active transportation fund for Prince Edward Island.

The new $5 million dollar active transportation fund will help build new walking and bike paths, widen paved shoulders, and better connect existing walking and cycling trails to improve and grow our active transportation network. 

“I am determined to face climate change head-on, and to do so, we have to put a dent in our transportation emissions. Creating a new active transportation fund is just one more step forward in supporting more sustainable transportation in our province.”

As of January 1, 2020, the practice of rebating driver’s license fees for Islanders will end. Registration fees will also increase for regular vehicles, however electric vehicles and hybrids will continue to receive registration fee discounts. 

“Under the new active transportation fund, a list of priority active transportation investments across the province will be compiled through public and partner feedback this winter,” said Minister Myers. “Priority projects will begin during the 2020 construction season.”
