Islanders encouraged to help shape new cultural strategy
Islanders can take part in shaping Prince Edward Island’s first cultural strategy through community consultations that will begin in April.
When complete this fall, the strategy will recommend cultural policy direction and guide the development of action plans, programs, and supports for the next 10 years. The consultations will include an online survey, coffeehouse conversations, roundtable discussions, and a Facebook page.
“Culture is very important to Islanders because it defines us as a people and supports our creative expression,” said Education, Early Learning and Culture Minister Doug Currie. “By outlining strategic direction for culture in our province, we can enhance the well-being of citizens and communities and grow our cultural sector.”
During the consultations, Islanders will be asked to share their perspectives on how to support the arts, creative industries and the preservation of Island culture. Among other topics to be explored are culture in a digital world, reconciliation, the identity of Prince Edward Island places and communities, and culture as a driver of economic and social development.
The four parts of the community consultations are:
• the online survey will invite the public to share their perspectives on what culture means to them and their community using videos featuring members of the arts community;
• coffee shop pop-ups will be hosted across the Island to engage Islanders in guided conversations on broad culture questions;
• roundtable discussions will be hosted to identify needs and receive input from experts including representatives of arts and heritage organizations, youth, arts patrons, and the Francophone and Indigenous communities; and
• the Facebook page will act as a virtual coffeehouse where Islanders can post and engage on the page with their ideas.
Following the consultations, a strategy document will be drafted and validated with participants. The final document will be shared at a cultural celebration in the fall.
“Culture belongs to everyone and we want a strategy that responds to the needs of Island citizens and communities,” said Minister Currie. “I encourage all Islanders to take part in this innovative consultation to create public policy that strengthens and grows culture in our province.”
