May 31 deadline for removing studded tires

April 29, 2026

Island drivers have until May 31 to remove studded tires from vehicles this year.

Studded tires are only permitted between October 1 and May 31.

Studded tires can increase safety on icy roads, but they do come with some downsides on dry pavement. They can be noisier, don’t grip as well on dry pavement, and can wear down roads if they’re used when they’re not needed.

Drivers could face fines starting at $150 if they are used off season.

Do your part to prevent unnecessary wear and tear on Island roads and your tires.
