Money and energy - two good things to save

Duane MacDonald

Islanders looking to save energy and money are taking advantage of the PEI government’s new Instant Savings Program and replacing everything from light bulbs to refrigerators with new energy-efficient models.

Until November 10, Islanders will be eligible for instant rebates in-store on select energy efficient products. In addition, instant rebates on energy-efficient appliances such as refrigerators and washing machines will be available year round.

“This is a great way for people to upgrade and save,” said Summerside Home Hardware Manager Duane MacDonald.

Rebates will be applied at the cash register; no application required. This is the first point-of-sale energy efficiency program that has been delivered in the province.

MacDonald said staff at his store had heard about these rebates in other provinces and were excited to learn that PEI would be bringing the program to the province.

MacDonald is seeing lots of customers taking advantage of the discounts on small things like LED light bulbs and larger ticket items like fridges and washing machines. “It’s driving some traffic here,” he said.

“There are some pretty big savings for our customers, right off the bat, at the cash, but also in the long run with better products.” MacDonald is pleased his business can work with government to help Islanders and the environment.  “I think it’s great that PEI is helping people think a bit more when they’re purchasing these things.”

“Switching to energy-efficient products is key to reducing a home’s energy consumption, and rebates are a great opportunity for Islanders to make smart energy choices for their home,” said Transportation, Infrastructure and Energy Minister Paula Biggar, whose department includes efficiencyPEI.

“From smart thermostats to washing machines, instant rebates are an easy way to encourage energy conservation and this program complements our existing suite of programs at efficiencyPEI, all designed to help Islanders conserve energy and save more.”

This program is provided by the Government of Prince Edward Island and funded in part by the Government of Canada.
