New mental health and addictions single point of access phone line launched

A new single point of access phone line for mental health and addictions services will make it easier for Islanders to find and receive appropriate and timely care.

Islanders can access the mental health and addictions phone line at 1-833-553-6983.  Mental health professionals will be answering the calls seven days a week, 24 hours a day, ensuring that Islanders have assistance finding and accessing mental health and addictions help. The Government of PEI has partnered with Medavie Health Services, a Canadian primary health care solutions company that manages Island EMS, to ensure that Islanders have assistance in accessing mental health and addictions support through a specialized healthcare team.

“There are many valuable mental health and addictions services offered across the province, and the new mental health and addictions phone line will allow us to connect Islanders directly with the help they need. We have heard from many people that it can be a challenge to navigate the system, so we’ve made it easier. When Islanders call the line they will reach a person, on the ground, who can help them find exactly what they need in a timely, efficient and helpful manner.”

- Health and Wellness Minister Ernie Hudson

A mental health professional (a registered nurse or a social worker) will triage each call for risk and acuity and will assess each client's needs.  For clients assisted over the phone, the RN or social worker may provide the following services:  de-escalation, brief clinical interventions/coping strategies, problem-solving, and care planning.  Calls may also involve directing clients to resources, providing referrals, developing crisis/safety plans and arranging follow-up.

“This marks an important step forward in providing safe and effective mental health services in the community, while ensuring Islanders receive appropriate care and move toward recovery,” said Matthew Crossman, Vice President of Operations, Medavie Health Services. “At Medavie, our mission is to improve the wellbeing of Canadians and we look forward to working in collaboration with the Government to provide high-quality care to Islanders today and well into the future.”
