New project paves the way for housing in Wellington

The Government of Prince Edward Island is investing $380,000  to support new housing in Wellington.

This investment supports the province’s Building Together housing strategy by accelerating housing supply and addressing the needs of a growing population. It reflects ongoing collaboration with municipalities, the private sector, and the Government of Canada to build more homes, faster, while fostering strong, vibrant communities.

The project will connect up to 16 new homes to the municipal sewer system instead of private septic tanks. This will help protect groundwater, reduce pollution, and support safe community growth. 

“Building more homes for Islanders supports communities like Wellington in remaining vibrant and thriving,” said Transportation, Infrastructure and Energy Minister Ernie Hudson. “Investing in infrastructure is a partnership between the province, communities and the Government of Canada to build a stronger future.”

The Government of Canada is contributing $570,000, and Wellington is providing $190,000, bringing the total investment, including provincial funding, to $1.1 million.

“We are excited to see this project move forward,” said Mayor of Wellington Irene MacCaull. “It will help bring new homes to our community and support families who want to live and work here.”

The project is funded through the Canada Housing Infrastructure Fund, part of an $86.2-million agreement to accelerate housing development, support higher-density communities, and meet demand for affordable housing.

“This funding helps get more homes built by making sure communities have the infrastructure they need,” said Housing and Communities Minister Kent Dollar. “It’s a practical step toward increasing housing supply and supporting growth across the province.”

The province continues to provide incentives and financial supports to increase housing supply, with a focus on higher-density development, in partnership with municipalities and the federal government.
