Proposals for new seniors housing sought

Investing in infrastructure -

The provincial government invites developers to submit proposals for at least 20 new affordable seniors housing units in Summerside.

The deadline for submitting proposals is March 15, 2018 and details are available at www.princeedwardisland.ca/en/tenders.  This project is part of $5.2 million in federal funding received through the Investment in Affordable Housing Agreement, which is allocated for new seniors units in areas of most need.

“Housing is a priority for government and this project is one of many initiatives underway to improve social housing options in the province,” Family and Human Services Minister Tina Mundy said.  “The timing of these proposals means developers can prepare for the spring construction season and building can begin soon to increase the supply of affordable housing for Island seniors.”

The federal funding also includes a request for proposals issued recently for 30 new seniors units in Charlottetown. Both the Summerside and Charlottetown units will be completed and available for rental by April 1, 2019.

In addition to this project, government continues to collaborate with municipalities, private developers, and communities to meet the current and future housing needs of Islanders.  For example:

  •  a team of housing experts and clients was assembled to help create a provincial housing action plan; and
  • a housing supply task force was established to inform the work of the team and identify innovative approaches to address housing challenges across the province.
