October is Women’s History Month, giving everyone the chance to learn more about, and celebrate, the many accomplishments of Island women throughout our Island’s rich history.

This year’s theme Through Her Lens: Celebrating the Diversity of Women emphasizes the importance of recognizing the achievements and contributions of women from diverse backgrounds. The theme helps focus attention on the unique perspectives, experiences and challenges faced by women, including Indigenous women, women from 2SLGBTQI+ communities, women with disabilities, and newcomer, racialized, and migrant women.

“Women’s History month is a time to reflect on the contributions that all women have made to shape our country and our province. As I continue to learn myself, I encourage Island residents to find out more about our heritage through the many different voices that tell our story. I am pleased with the steps that we are taking to integrate these diverse voices and stories into our school curriculums, so the youth of our province will be able to better understand and appreciate women from all backgrounds.”

- Hon. Natalie Jameson, Minister Responsible for the Status of Women

The Department of Education and Early Years (DEEY) is excited to launch The Black Women’s History Project, a grade eight social studies curriculum resource focusing on Black women's history in PEI. The project, led by Debbie Langston, DEEY's Diversity Consultant, was created in collaboration with the Black Cultural Society of PEI, descendants of Black Islanders, the Advisory Council on the Status of Women, the Interministerial Women’s Secretariat, and the Social Studies and innovation leader with Department of Education and Early Years. The resource contains lesson plans, videos, a timeline of Black Islander history, and materials to support teachers. The PEI Museum and Heritage Foundation has also designed a complementary Show and Tell trunk and Bog Walk for students and educators.
