Week celebrates the ‘mortar’ that builds communities

Investing in Infrastructure -

Roads, bridges, and water and wastewater systems are the public works infrastructure that helps communities grow.

National Public Works Week (May 21 to 27) recognizes the contribution this infrastructure makes in connecting individuals and communities. It also honours public works professionals who build that infrastructure throughout Canada and the United States.

“Everyone should take a few moments to recognize the significant contribution public works employees make to their communities,” noted Cornwall Mayor Minerva McCourt. “On behalf of the Town of Cornwall I am pleased to thank the many public works personnel who help make our communities run smoothly and efficiently, often working in difficult conditions when the rest of us are safe, warm, and dry.”

The provincial government’s balanced 2017-18 operating budget includes $23 million for investments in cost-shared infrastructure programs, $32 million for highway maintenance, and $8 million for building maintenance. The capital budget for 2017-18 includes $45 million for investments in highways, bridges, buildings, and land.

“We all benefit from the commitment and the wide range of skills that our public works professionals bring to projects that improve the Island’s quality of life,”

Transportation, Infrastructure and Energy Minister Paula Biggar said. “I would like to extend my thanks to the many public works professionals – in my department and in municipalities across the province – who help make life easier for Islanders.”
