Child Food Security Program

The Department of Social Development and Housing is offering support for Island families impacted by the closure of schools during January, 2022 in lieu of the Healthy School Food Program. If your family is facing challenges securing healthy food, this program can help. We provide pre-cooked, reheatable meals for children that are delivered directly to your home.

Who is Eligible for the Food Security Program?

The program operates on a self-referral basis. Any family facing challenges with food security is eligible to receive meals for children. Children must be able to consume solid food.

Meals will be delivered to varied types of housing (apartments, duplex, detached, single family, day programs, etc). Please provide detailed delivery instructions pertaining to your type of accommodation. We can also make arrangements to deliver to childcare locations or workplaces as necessary.

How Do I Apply?

Please fill out the form available through the link at the bottom of this webpage.

What Information is Required?

The application is simple and requires minimal information. We are asking for the following:

  • Name of parent or guardian
  • Contact info for parent or guardian (phone number and email)
  • Address for delivery
  • Number of children
  • Allergies or food sensitivities
  • Any special delivery instructions

How and When is the Service Provided?

Meals will be delivered to the address provided on the application.

Families who have already registered for the program do not have to register again for subsequent meal deliveries. Families who have not yet registered are still eligible to do so; your information will be added to the next available delivery. The Food Security Program will be delivering meals between 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. on the following dates:

  • Wednesday, January 5, 2022
  • Friday, January 7, 2022
  • Tuesday, January 11, 2022
  • Due to pending inclement weather, deliveries will be Thursday January 13 from 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., instead of Friday, January 14.
  • Tuesday, January 18, 2022
  • Friday, January 21, 2022

Each delivery includes three meals per registered child. The final delivery date will be on Friday, January 21, 2022, but may continue if school closures are extended.

We require that an individual be at the address to accept the meals. Meals will not be left unattended for food safety reasons.
