Coverage for Gender-Affirming Non-Surgical Procedures

PEI Medicare covers the following non-surgical procedures:
- hair removal and hair replacement therapy as clinically indicated
- voice therapy
- hormone therapy, including puberty suppression
Most non-surgical gender-affirming procedures can be completed within Prince Edward Island (PEI). To qualify for coverage from PEI Medicare for non-surgical procedures completed in PEI, you must:
- Complete the online non-surgical request form. You may complete this form yourself or with the support of a health care provider.
- Receive written approval from the Gender-Affirming Procedure Approval Committee before undergoing the procedure.
*Important: Requests for retroactive coverage (for procedures completed without prior approval) will not be considered. - If you need to travel out-of-province for a gender affirming surgical or non-surgical procedure, you will need to follow the steps outlined at Financial Assistance for Out-of-Province Medical Travel.
How to Apply
To request coverage, complete the online form Request for Non-Surgical Gender-Affirming Procedures Form.
Before you start the form, you will need to have the following information:
- Your PEI Health Card number, and contact information
- The type of procedure(s) you are requesting (e.g. hormone therapy)
- The name of the provider or business that will be performing the requested procedure (if applicable)
- Supporting documents such as quotes, estimates, or receipts showing cost of the procedure
- A brief description as to how this procedure will reduce gender incongruence
What Happens After You Submit
You will be contacted directly by the email provided in your submission with the approval or non-approval decision.
Please note: Coverage is not approved until you receive an official approval letter.
