Request a Colorectal Home Screening Kit - Get a FIT
Early detection of colorectal cancer could save your life.
If eligible, you can be screened for colorectal cancer by a test you take at home called a fecal immunochemical test (FIT). The FIT will check for blood in the stool – a sign of colorectal cancer – that cannot be seen with the naked eye.
Do I qualify for a home screening test (a FIT)?
You are eligible for a FIT every two years, if you:
- are 50-74 years of age;
- have an average risk of colon cancer;
- you have not done a FIT test in the past two years; and,
- have not had a colonoscopy in the past five years and do not have one scheduled
When should I not request a FIT kit?
You should not request a FIT if you:
- have a family history of colorectal cancer;
- have a personal history of severe polyps or cancer of the bowel;
- have changes in your bowel movements;
- have visible blood in your stool; and/or
- are experiencing excessive vomiting.
If any of the above apply to you, consult a health professional to discuss which form of screening (colonoscopy, FIT, or other) is right for you.
What do I need to request a FIT kit?
You will need to provide your current contact information and your PEI Health Card number on this application.
Is there a fee to take a FIT?
There is no fee for the FIT.
