What is the Pesticide Applicator Continuing Education Courses (CEC’s)?

  • The Continuing Education Courses will enable a holder of a Pesticide Class A Applicator Certificate to renew their certification without writing the Class A exam. 
  • Certification is required every 5 years. 
  • These courses are for RENEWING the Class A Certificate only.

What is a Pesticide Class A Applicator Certificate?

An individual or company wanting to apply a commercial class pesticide to an agricultural crop must obtain a pesticide applicator certificate for agricultural use through the Department of Environment, Energy and Climate Action.   

*First time applicators must write an exam and achieve a mark of 75% or better to obtain the certificate

Who is eligible to participate in the continuing education courses? 

You must have successfully written the Class A Pesticide Exam and have a valid Pesticide Class A Certificate.

What topics are covered in the two courses?  

OPTION 1 - There are two courses available: DAY A and DAY B

  • DAY A - Topics:
    General Information, Pesticide Regulations, Environmental Safety, Aquatic Impact of Pesticides, and Application Technology.
  • DAY B - Topics:
    Emergency Response, First Aid, Pesticide Monitoring & Enforcement, Labelling, Professionalism, Traceability, Integrated Pest Management, Human Health & Safety, and Climate Change.

How do I collect my CEC’s?

  • You are required to attend both DAY A and DAY B courses over a five-year period to renew your pesticide class A applicator certificate before it expires.
  • You must Pre-Register for either DAY A or DAY B course with the PEI Department of Agriculture. 
  • You can only be credited with one of the courses per year.
  • Attend the course.

Who maintains a record of my attendance?

PEI Department of Agriculture keeps a record of the course dates, locations and attendance.

Can I take both Day A and Day B in the same year?

You will only be credited with one day per year.  This is a continuing education program.

When are the continuing education courses offered? 

Courses are held January through March, virtually and in person, free of cost, on the dates listed below. Registration begins at 8:15, and courses are from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. A light lunch and refreshments will be provided at the in-person courses.

What is the cost to renew my Pesticide Class A Applicator Certificate?

The fee is $75 (HST included) and must be paid before the certificate can be issued. Certificates are issued by the Department of Environment, Energy and Climate Action and are valid for a maximum of five years. You must apply to renew your certificate. Click here for the application form.

Are there alternate options available to renew my Pesticide Class A Applicator Certificate?

OPTION 2 - Online training course with online exam

You can renew or obtain a new certificate by attending an online training course and writing the online exam, during any of the dates listed below. The course is offered by University of Guelph over five days, Monday to Friday, and requires approximately 1½ hours of time per day. A pass mark of 75% is required.                          

When are the training courses?

2023/2024 Course Dates:

  • December 11-15, 2023 - completed
  • January 22-26. 2024
  • February 5-9, 2024
  • February 26 - March 1, 2024
  • March 11-15, 2024
  • April 8-12, 2024

You must pre-register at least ten days prior to the start of the course.

What is the cost?

  • There is no cost to write the exam. 

What if my pesticide class A applicator certificate is expiring in a few months and I have not attended any CEC’s? 

You only have one option:  Write the two hour exam.
