Who needs to hold an Elevator and Lifts Installer's Registration?

Any individual who wishes to install, maintain, or alter an elevator or lift must hold an Elevator and Lifts Installer's Registration.

An Elevator and Lifts Installers Registration is available in two levels:

Level I: allows an individual to install, maintain or alter equipment that falls under Standard B44 of the Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators and Standard B355, Lifts for Persons With Physical Disabilities.

Level II: allows an individual to install, maintain, or alter equipment that falls under Standard B355, Lifts for Persons With Physical Disabilities.

Are there any special qualifications to apply?

To obtain either a Level I or a Level II Elevator and Lifts Installer's Registration you must be employed by a company that holds a valid Elevator and Lifts Contractor's License.

To obtain a Level I Elevator and Lifts Installer's Registration you must hold a valid:

  • Trades Qualification Certificate as an elevator mechanic;
  • certificate issued by the International Union of Elevator Constructors upon completion of the Canadian Elevator Industry Education Program; or
  • Elevator Technician Certificate issued by the National Association of Elevator Contractors.

To obtain a Level II Elevator and Lifts Installer's Registration you must hold a valid Accessibility Technician Certificate issued by the National Association of Elevator Contractors.

Is there a fee?

$60 is the fee for an Elevator and Lifts Contractor's License.  There is no HST.

Make cheques payable to the Minister of Finance.

How long is the license valid?

Level I and Level II registrations are valid for a period of three years.
